Hello, I’m Gail Bates, owner of

Heart & Mettle.

It all began in 2003 when I (nervously) first took some of my jewellery to a craft fair. It was a two-day event and I virtually sold out after day one. I spent the night in between, remaking and re-beading and I knew then, that people loved my jewellery. For years I made pieces to order, offered jewellery parties and went to craft fairs. But it was only during lockdown in 2020 I had some time to think about getting a website together and properly organising my much loved little business…and so in early 2021 Heart & Mettle was born.

I work hard to find beautiful crystals and turn them into jewellery that I hope you’ll love. Each crystal is a little piece of natural art in itself; formed within the earth, sometimes millions of years ago. People have loved crystals since ancient times, believing they held spiritual properties and prizing them for their rarity and beauty. Crystals are as popular today as ever, Victoria Beckham lines her catwalk shows with black obsidian to keep away negative energy, Adele uses crystals to help calm her stage fright nerves, and Jessica Diner; British Vogue Director has them on her bedside table. Celebrities from Kylie Jenner to Gisele Bundchen talk of their love of crystal jewellery. 

People often ask me which crystal they should have and I always say; if they’re unsure, just to choose the one they’re drawn to, maybe by the colour, maybe it matches their favourite outfit… they’re always amazed, when they read about the properties of the crystal, to find it very often turns out to be just what they needed!
